So You Want To Improve Your Home But Don’t Know Where To Start?

You’ve made the decision that you need to renovate, but you just don’t know where to begin. It can be overwhelming, especially when there are so many decisions to be made. In this article, we’re going to cover the steps you can take now to get your plans moving.

When a customer first contacts us about their renovation ideas, they will often ask our opinion on what we think will work best in their space. While we love sharing our ideas and tips from previous projects, this isn’t the best place to start! Before our team or a design team can make suggestions about design, it’s important to get to the bottom of what’s really needed.

To help you figure out what you really need from your space, we’ve put together the following questions for you to run through. Now’s the time to bring together everyone who lives in the space getting renovated, that’s right – kids too (they often have the best ideas!), and jot down notes under each question.

And remember, by being as thorough and honest as you can now, it will save you time and decision-making down the renovation track!

Questions to answer before you renovate:

1.    Why are you doing this renovation?

2.    What do you want to achieve?

3.    Are you happy living in this neighbourhood?

4.    How long do you plan to live here?

5.    What do you like most about this home?

6.    What do you dislike the most?

7.    Are there enough bedrooms?

8.    Are the bedrooms large enough?

9.    Is there enough living space?

10. Do the living areas and outdoor areas flow?

11. Is the kitchen comfortable and efficient to work in?

12. Does everyone have the work and living space they need?

13. Is the house comfortable to live in? Is it too hot in summer or too cold in winter?

14. Is there enough natural light in each of the rooms, particularly the living area?

15. Do you have enough storage space?

Now you’ve done the hard work and answered the questions, you can take these answers with you to an initial meeting with your builder or designer. Make sure that your designer finds solutions to the challenges you’ve discovered from the questions above before you move forward.
