Luxury Meets Eco-Friendly Design: A Deep Dive into MA Building's Latest Passive Home

A Vision of Sustainable Luxury

At MA Building, located in the stunning landscape of Wanaka, we are delighted to highlight our latest passive house project featured in Distinctive Designs Magazine. This project embodies our belief that top-tier design and sustainability can coexist beautifully.

In this article, pulled together by the guys at Distinctive Designs - we delve into how integrating passive house elements into my own home transformed his approach to building: "It's now the only way to build in my eyes." And how this lead to one of Wanaka’s few fully-certified Passive Homes.

Strategic Design and Innovative Features

This newly completed passive home, comprising a 140m2 living space with an additional 60m2 garage and guest apartment, demonstrates how thoughtful design can enhance energy efficiency and comfort. The design strategically utilises orientation, thermal mass, insulation, and high-quality glass to maximize natural heating and cooling, maintaining indoor temperatures well below the passive house threshold of 25 degrees Celsius during warm months.

The 8-page article goes into detail on all the decisions made throughout the process of building a Passive House in Wanaka.

Collaboration and Expertise

Our project's success stems from collaboration with industry experts like eZed, Queenstown-based structural engineers specializing in low-energy designs. They consider each project's unique requirements, including client preferences, location, and architectural style, ensuring that each build is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Luxurious Details and Functional Artistry

The interior features, crafted by Tarras-based HBH Joinery, highlight the fusion of luxury and practicality. The kitchen boasts automatic high cupboard panels and a custom-stained American oak front, creating an airy, luxurious feel. Richard Hart from HBH Joinery notes the challenges and triumphs of maximizing space and customizing details to client specifications, including an innovatively designed island benchtop made from solid concrete and electrically operated overhead cabinets.

Sustainable Materials and Craftsmanship

Our choice of materials reflects our commitment to sustainability without compromising on quality. From Tasmanian oak paneling that adds warmth and character, to the non-itchy terra Lana natural wool insulation, every material is selected for its environmental credentials and superior performance. The Metcom 7 cladding and meticulously detailed window installations exemplify our attention to detail and dedication to creating homes that are not only energy-efficient but also visually stunning.

A Testament to Collaborative Building

This project illustrates the power of collaboration across various specialists, from interior designers at Instinct Interiors to technological solutions by Custom Digital to ensure seamless Wi-Fi connectivity throughout the home. Such partnerships are crucial in achieving the rigorous standards required for passive house certification and in pushing the boundaries of traditional building practices.

Celebrating a New Standard in Building

As we reflect on this project, featured proudly in Distinctive Designs Magazine, we are reminded of our mission to redefine the standards of residential construction. This home is not just a place of residence but a benchmark for future projects, combining exquisite design with unparalleled environmental consciousness.

At MA Building, we are excited to continue this journey, creating spaces that not only meet but exceed our clients' expectations for luxury, comfort, and sustainability. Join us as we pave the way to a greener, more stylish future in home building.
